Types of Carpet Fiber

Carpet is one of the most versatile flooring materials available. This soft, cushioned material will be at home in almost any room of your house. Unlike other flooring materials, carpet insulates against cold subflooring and is the most welcome in bedrooms during cold winters. Carpeting is made from a variety of natural and synthetic fibers; the most common of which are nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and wool. These fibers are looped through carpet backing much like how a sewing machine sews on buttons. Loops are then processed to create carpet pile which is then cut, rolled, and distributed to showrooms like ours. Nylon Fiber

Nylon is an extremely popular carpet fiber used in nearly all carpet manufactured. Nylon carpeting is the softest of all synthetic carpet fiber types. Carpeting made from nylon fiber is very durable and resistant to stains and abrasions. Even heavily trafficked nylon fibers can be restored to much of their original loft by a steam cleaning.

Polyester Fiber

Prized for its rich vibrant colors that are fade resistant, polyester fibers are non-allergenic. Eco-sensitive carpet and rug manufactures can source this material from recycled plastic bottles. This may not be the best choice for high-traffic areas as it is prone to flattening under weight and doesn’t necessarily retain its shape over time.

Polypropylene Fiber

Nearly as soft as nylon, Polypropylene Fibers often referred to as olefin are similar to wool and frequently used as a substitute to create a synthetic version. Not quite as strong as nylon Polypropylene yarn, it’s typically used in loop-style carpeting like the very popular Berber. Polypropylene carpeting doesn’t repel dirt and oil as well as others.

Wool Fiber

Wool is the softest natural carpet fiber type available. This natural, luxurious, long-lasting fiber can be found in many different grades of carpet. Lower-grade wools are susceptible to staining, while high-grade wool can be quite costly. Some carpets blend wool with synthetic fibers to create a carpet with added benefits.
